What are the adenoids?
Tonsils are made up of three different parts. The tonsils as we traditionally refer to them are the palatine tonsils. These occur on either side of the throat. If enlarged they look like two golf balls in the back of the mouth. In addition to the palatine tonsils there are also the adenoid (or nasopharyngeal) tonsils and the lingual tonsils.
The adenoids lie in the back of the throat, however are too high up to be seen when looking into the mouth. Essentially they lie in the back of the nose (known as the nasopharynx) where there is a passage between the nose and the mouth. Due to this location, when adenoids get enlarged, they can cause difficulty in breathing through the nose. The lingual tonsils lie on the back of the tongue.

The following instructions are based on Dr. Alford's experience with many rhinoplasty/septoplasty operations. This handout is designed to answer the most commonly asked questions following surgery of the nose; it is not intended to provide answers to every question or situation that may arise. Attempt to follow the instructions faithfully. Those who do so generally have the smoothest postoperative course. Our telephone number is: (713) 532-3223
Planning Before Surgery
If you live in another city, we prefer you to stay in town with a friend or at a hotel for 5-7 days after discharge from the hospital. Please make these arrangements and let Dr. Alford's nurse where you will be staying.
Schedule your postoperative visit for 1 to 4 days after your surgery. Arrange for someone to accompany you to Dr. Alford's office and take you home following your appointment.

ROCHESTER, MN -- January 3, 2002 -- A Mayo Clinic study published in the January edition of Laryngoscope has found that a single 10 mg dose of the steroid dexamethasone provides safe, effective and inexpensive treatment for bacterial or viral pharyngitis (sore throat).
The study evaluated 118 patients seen at Saint Mary's Hospital, one of Mayo Clinic's two hospitals, in Rochester, Minnesota, between August 1998 and July 2000 who complained of a sore throat. Each patient was asked to rate their pain on a scale of one to 10. A throat culture was obtained and every patient was given a course of antibiotics. In addition, some were given a single dose of steroid, dexamethasone, either in a shot or a pill form, while others were given a placebo in pill or injection form. Neither the physician nor patient knew if they were given the steroid or the placebo.
